![]() I'm not even going to try to compare the two tools in detail. Here is the Lightroom tone curve:Īnd here is the LightZone zone mapper, for comparison: This bears a very rough resemblance to the tone curves in Adobe Lightroom. What has always fascinated me about LightZone is its key tool, something called the zone mapper. This is not possible in Lightroom, which has no selection tool.īut LightZone isn't just about selective editing. LightZone, like Photoshop, allows selective editing, meaning that I can select a region of a photo (say, the sky) and change the contrast in that region without affecting other parts of the photo. Well, for many users of Adobe Lightroom, that's where Photoshop comes in, but I hate Photoshop. But Lightroom has its weakesses, especially as an editor, and that's where LightZone comes in. Lightroom's greatest strength is really photo processing and management, that is, with Adobe Lightroom, I can review, evaluate, tag, and process (edit) a lot of photos very efficiently. Even so, Adobe Lightroom remains a multi-faceted app that does a bit of everything, including photo editing, creating web sites, print managment. That's why Adobe created Lightroom, which, unlike Photoshop, is designed specifically and exclusively to meet the needs of photographers. It was never intended to be just for editing images, and is still used for logo design and creative art work, as well as photo editing. As everybody knows, Photoshop is so powerful you can dispense with the camera altogether and just paint fairies and unicorns if you like. What are those benefits? The main one is that LightZone is nothing but a photo editor, and it's a darned good one. It's still too slow, but I can live with that in return for its other benefits. ![]() And I saw some video clips that demonstrate a couple of the key tools in LightZone and that helped me grasp the program's approach. Well, they had a sale this month (November 2007) that brought the price down. In the past, I thought it was too expensive and too slow, and I had trouble really "getting" what LightZone is all about. I've tried several previous demos but didn't buy for various reasons. I finally broke down and purchased Light Crafts LightZone photo editor. ![]()

There were several instances with Window Media Player where you had minimal file details and no frame by frame advancements. When compared with the watered down Windows Media Player, QuickTime looks much better. That sounds great in theory, but outside of basic recording, it does not do much more. Perfect choice for beds and borders, prairies and meadows, wildflower gardens or cottage gardens. ‘Prairie Splendor’ is a compact coneflower that features bright rose-magenta rays surrounding a dark orange center cone. Thrives in full sun in average, dry to medium moisture, well drained soils. Echinacea purpurea, also known as purple coneflower, has pink flowers and a large, orange-brown cone in the centre. Genus name of Echinacea comes from the Greek word echinos meaning hedgehog or sea-urchin in reference to the spiny center cone found on most flowers in the genus. The dead flower stems will remain erect well into the winter, and if flower heads are not removed, the blackened cones may be visited by goldfinches or other birds that feed on the seeds. Step 3 Cut growth between 1 and 4 from the ground. Make sure you have a sharp and clean pair of shears for pruning and cutting back your coneflowers. Each flower blooms at the top of the stem and continues to bloom for a few weeks. Since they bloom frequently, you can prolong the blooming season by deadheading i.e., removing the spent flowers from living plants. Step 2 Use sharp, clean pruning shears for cutting. Having said that, deadheading is the most important maintenance for coneflowers. Prune back the outer stems of Shasta daisies and purple coneflower to create a ring of shorter stiffer stems on each plant. Showy daisy-like purple coneflowers (to 5" diameter) bloom throughout summer atop stiff stems clad with coarse, ovate to broad-lanceolate, dark green leaves. Deadheading and cutting flowers in the summer is also an option. They are naturally attractive to bees and other pollinating insects but are not attractive to deer.Echinacea purpurea, commonly called purple coneflower, is a coarse, rough-hairy, herbaceous perennial that is native to moist prairies, meadows and open woods of the central to southeastern United States (Ohio to Michigan to Iowa south to Louisiana and Georgia). Their height makes them a good option to border fences and other structures. These long-lived blooms are perfect for naturalized areas such as meadows, woodland areas, and wildflower gardens. They may be susceptible to Japanese beetles, leaf spots, and aster yellows disease. This is optional and can cause late blooming, but the plant will grow back more compact and stocky. Soils do not need to be fertilized as Purple Coneflower are quite tolerant of poor soils. Cut the coneflowers down to one-half of their length with pruning shears in the early summer. To overwinter, prune plants to soil level when plant growth slows in fall. They are best grown in full sun but should tolerate some shade. Deadhead just below the base of the flower for continued bloom. These hardy plants prefer dry to medium moisture soils, but can tolerate drought, heat, humidity and clay. The spent blooms turn black in the winter and may occasionally be visited by birds, particularly goldfinches. Purple Coneflower may self seed if not deadheaded. The body of the plant is covered in hair-like follicles that add to the 'wild' look of these meadow plants. Young's influence also served as the poet's introduction to religious radicalism. The prosperity of Milton's father allowed his eldest son to obtain a private tutor, Thomas Young, a Scottish Presbyterian with a MA from the University of St Andrews. ![]() The elder Milton was noted for his skill as a musical composer, and this talent left his son with a lifelong appreciation for music and friendships with musicians such as Henry Lawes. ![]() He lived in and worked from a house in Cheapside, at Bread Street where the Mermaid Tavern was located. In London, the senior John Milton married Sarah Jeffrey (1572–1637) and found lasting financial success as a scrivener. The senior John Milton (1562–1647) moved to London around 1583 after being disinherited by his devout Catholic father Richard "the Ranger" Milton for embracing Protestantism. John Milton was born in Bread Street, London, on 9 December 1608, the son of composer John Milton and his wife Sarah Jeffrey. Portrait of Milton at age 10 in Milton's Cottage, Chalfont St Giles painted by Cornelis Janssens van Ceulen By the time of his death in 1674, Milton was impoverished and on the margins of English intellectual life but famous throughout Europe and unrepentant for political choices that placed him at odds with governing authorities. Milton's views developed from extensive reading, travel, and experience that began with his days as a student at Cambridge in the 1620s and continued through the English Civil War, which started in 1642 and continued through 1651. The Restoration of 1660 and his loss of vision later deprived Milton much of his public platform, but he used the period to develop many of his major works. While once considered dangerously radical and heretical, Milton contributed to a seismic shift in accepted public opinions during his life that ultimately elevated him to public office in England. In his early years, Milton studied at Christ's College at the University of Cambridge, one of the world's most prestigious universities, and then travelled, wrote poetry mostly for private circulation, and launched a career as pamphleteer and publicist under Charles I's increasingly autocratic rule and Britain's breakdown into constitutional confusion and ultimately civil war. Phases of Milton's life parallel the major historical and political divisions in Stuart England at the time. Milton was revered by poets such as William Blake, William Wordsworth, and Thomas Hardy. Samuel Johnson praised Paradise Lost as "a poem which.with respect to design may claim the first place, and with respect to performance, the second, among the productions of the human mind", though he (a Tory) described Milton's politics as those of an "acrimonious and surly republican". Milton is described as the "greatest English author" by biographer William Hayley, and he remains generally regarded "as one of the preeminent writers in the English language", though critical reception has oscillated in the centuries since his death often on account of his republicanism. He was the first modern writer to employ unrhymed verse outside of the theatre or translations. His desire for freedom extended beyond his philosophy and was reflected in his style, which included his introduction of new words (coined from Latin and Ancient Greek) to the English language. Milton achieved fame and recognition during his lifetime, his celebrated Areopagitica (1644), written in condemnation of pre-publication censorship, is among history's most influential and impassioned defences of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. He also served as a civil servant for the Commonwealth of England under its Council of State and later under Oliver Cromwell. Paradise Lost elevated Milton's reputation as one of history's greatest poets. It addressed the fall of man, including the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and God's expulsion of them from the Garden of Eden. ![]() His 1667 epic poem Paradise Lost, written in blank verse and including over ten chapters, was written in a time of immense religious flux and political upheaval.
