The underpass at Eight Mile and Woodward has long attracted homeless people and panhandlers, many of whom use it as a sleeping shelter. Another cleanup is currently being organized. MDOT has already given Ferndale approval to do cleanup up maintenance in the underpass area. Twardy said that an unobstructed pathway will have 6-foot wide stripes of textured paint on the sidewalk, similar to paint that is used on the city’s bike lanes for increased visibility. Part of the art includes vividly colored curved modules on the sidewalk with an 8-foot pathway between them. “We’re confident we’ll be able to install some this year and some next year.” “MDOT is working to get us an answer by the end of the year,” Twardy said. The permit covers doing murals and sidewalk art in the underpass. ![]() “Some have mental health issues, some are dealing with substance abuse, and others may just need a driver’s license.”įerndale has a permit application pending with the Michigan Department of Transportation, which controls the roadway along Woodard and Eight Mile Roads. “We’re trying to connect these folks with housing,” Twardy said. Street outreach teams have been meeting with people for almost a year, while the service agencies and cities have been working for several years. ![]()
